Recently when meeting with a new client, I heard a comment I hear often. Why decorate my bathroom when I’m the only one who sees it?
*Gasp!*
To that question I reply (hand to heart), Who else matters? YOU are the most important person! It’s not being selfish; it’s called creating a haven. Your home needs to be a place of safety and beauty, a place to relax and get reenergized to enter the world outside your front door.
I’m paraphrasing here, but Oprah said —and I do hate to quote Oprah—that the best thing you can do for yourself is have a decorated room. It’s self love. I couldn’t agree more.
My new client proceeded to guide me into her powder room, which I will now and forever more refer to only as The Den of Satan. I hung my head and said, “If you’re not depressed, it’s no thanks to The Den of Satan.” The oppressive spirit clinging desperately to her stained shower curtain demanded exorcism. The situation was dire, and nothing motivates me more.
Thankfully, we are well on our way to a glorious BEFORE and AFTER story, complements of moi and a little thing I like to call redemptive design.
