Nestled in the charming mountains of North Carolina, interior designer Eric Ross masterfully reimagines a rustic retreat, creating a bright and inviting space that blends luxury with comfort. The Ross family sought to transform their newly acquired cottage “Roostica Cottage” located in Highlands, North Carolina, into a welcoming getaway that stands apart from traditional lodge aesthetics.

With its original strong features, including an updated kitchen and good bones, the renovation focused on lightening the space through whitewashed brick and painted paneling, enhancing the airy feel. Eric’s design harmonizes neutral tones with soft fabrics, balancing masculine and feminine elements for a sophisticated yet cozy atmosphere. Key updates included replacing outdated light fixtures and adding a screened porch with a fireplace—perfect for gatherings. The result is a serene escape that caters to discerning visitors, offering a fresh take on mountain living while maintaining an affordable charm for families.

“We wanted to tone down the knotty pine by painting it white, which really helped to brighten up the whole space. You still have all those cozy textures that shine through, but painting it all white made the rooms more cohesive and honestly, it makes the space feel bigger.”
