Green Hills, Tennessee

This 1920s home in the heart of a sought-after village in Nashville was a fulfilling project, full of elegant details and thoughtful design. The central hallway, one of my favorite architectural elements, set the tone for the entire house. The entry hall expanded from front to back and beckoned me to use a custom hand-painted Chinese wallcovering. The sepia toned palette of parchment, taupe, and brown created a tranquil atmosphere, flowing from the foyer to the mezzanine. This neutral backdrop allowed flexibility for the rest of the home’s design.

In the living room, the client’s extensive French antique collection was a key feature. However, the delicate, feminine pieces needed balance. I introduced large-scale upholstered furniture in cream, brown, and cognac, with pale blue accents. The heavier, textured fabrics grounded the room, giving it a more tailored, masculine edge that complemented the ornate antiques without overpowering them.

The kitchen, with its black cabinetry, white marble counters, and reclaimed brick floors, was visually heavy. To soften the intense west-facing sunlight, I applied dark green and black sisal wallcovering, which absorbed the light and reduced glare. Straw-colored accents added warmth and a subtle feminine touch to the space.

For the primary bedroom, I refreshed the décor with a soft celadon wall fabric and a large-scale pink and brown Jacobean floral for the drapery. A petite tufted bench gave the room a cozy, inviting feel, enhancing its elegance.

The grandchildren’s bedroom was a playful escape, with whimsical French twin beds and a lively chocolate, raspberry, and key lime green print on the roman shades and pillows. The wallpapered ceiling in latticework added a fun, youthful touch.

This design balances elegance and comfort, creating a timeless Southern home that honors both tradition and modern living.
