Brentwood, Tennessee

When a long-time client asked for my help downsizing from her large home—previously decorated with heavy Country French elements—I saw an opportunity to refresh her style. Her new duplex in a retirement community was about half the size of her former residence and felt more like a condo, lacking architectural detail. My goal was to infuse this compact space with a sense of grandeur.

The challenge was significant; each room seemed more basic than the last, dominated by beige tones and oak cabinetry. We decided that cosmetic updates were essential to achieve a more polished look. My first step was to enlarge all the doorways to eight feet, instantly making the rooms feel more expansive and stately. The client desired a modern feel, reminiscent of a Parisian apartment in a classic neoclassical building.

To set the tone, I chose beautiful blond-finish French oak hardwood floors, which informed the overall color scheme. Walls were painted a soft, silvery celadon, complemented by fabrics in teal, aqua, and citrine—essentially a contemporary take on classic French colors. This milky palette evokes the soft focus of a Monet painting, giving the home a sense of age and charm.

Opening up the kitchen to the great room and breakfast area improved traffic flow and visual connection. We opted for custom cabinetry in a “roasted marshmallow” hue to harmonize with the flooring. A standout feature was the powder room, adorned with hand-painted Gracie wallpaper of flora and fauna, creating an enchanting focal point and a personal touch for the bird-loving client.

Lighting was another key consideration; well-chosen fixtures act as jewelry for the home. I selected elegant chandeliers—some crystal, others in silver and gold—that echoed the French theme.

Downsizing can be emotionally challenging, but this client wanted a space that reflected her style. By incorporating custom finishes and natural materials, we transformed a simple duplex into a splendid retreat, blending convenience with the elegance of a Paris apartment.

“Working with Eric is like working with an old friend, it’s very comfortable and relaxed.”
